What inspires your designs?
I wouldn’t say I have a specific point of inspiration, most of the jeans I paint come naturally to me while I’m thinking. I could be sitting in my classroom, looking out of window and trying to pass time – and then suddenly see a wall of tiles that sparks my imagination. I just want to express myself, and IggyJeans allows me to!
What motivated you to start IggyJeans?
I started Iggyjeans sometime in early 2017. The whole thing just happened by chance, it was mostly that I was at the right place at the right time, so I decided to take initiative to make something out of it. What mostly motivates me is how fun it is to paint on jeans and the whole creative process behind it.
What is your DIY’ing process?
It depends. Sometimes I just want to make something super simple and unembellished, other times my designs are more alive with a personal touch. My main ingredients are paint, jeans and creativity. Just have fun!
What are you loving at the moment?
I’m too indecisive. My interests are constantly changing, so it would be wrong to say what I love right now because it will probably change by the time this is published. I’ll always love experimenting, exploring and trying out new ideas. My advice is not to follow trends – try to find out what you like, personally – it can take time. I try to read a lot, listen to music and just look at my environment to learn more about myself and what I love.
Any denim style tips?
I wear anything with jeans. I dress them up and dress them down – although, dressing them up can be really fun. It’s all about imagination, I like to make every look I wear into a narrative or have a background. Every look I wear should in some way represent a character that I’ve imagined in my head or read about; it could even be based on a person. A look always tells a story – I make up a name, what age they are and what century they belong to, etc.
What inspires your choice of jeans?
Personally, straight-leg and high-waisted jeans without any stretch are my favourite. So, a lot of denim inspiration for me comes from the classic cowboy/girl/person era, rather than specific people. I’ve seen a lot of throwback denim numbers from runway and vintage imagery from the 80s that look pretty cool. Some Instagram accounts I really like are ones that post images from vintage fashion shows and nostalgic moodboards – I learn a lot from them. Some great ones are: @milkcl0thes, @virgomood, @the90ssupermodels, @conde.nasty and @chanel_archives.
